Here is a further thought, that pertains the the pig picture, rather than the topics discussed last time. I venture that of overriding importance to the future of the library is to get young, pre-school children in the habit of visiting libraries and of looking to libraries as prime sources for all sorts of information; for fun, learning, earning, entertainment and more; in short: for all aspects of coping and thriving throughout life. Once a child has that habit, I am of the view s/he will be a library patron and supporter for life.
If a person does not grow up with this wisdom that libraries are a part of life, it is far more difficult for the library to reach that adult. If you accept my premise, a prime mandate of the library is to reach out to new parents with whatever it takes to get them and their very young children into the library and into its many resources.
